Emilia Romagna is famous throughout the world because of the great Parmigiano Reggiano, the parmesan cheese now trademarked for its name and made in Parma, the balsamic vinegar of Modena, Ferrari cars of Modena and also because of its fabulous salamis and prosciutto ham. Parma has a saying: “The pig is like Verdi’s music, there’s nothing to throw away.” Beautiful Ravenna famous for the incredible mozaics in the churches and palaces which are now on UNESCO World heritage list.
This region is the place to eat to your heart’s content where the assortment of prosciutto and salamis is never ending. The cheese is to die for and in Parma you can visit the factory to see the cheese making process. Parma is also the home of Verdi the famous classical music composer. Every year there is the Verdi Festival with many operas performed.
Bologna, the capital is a city rich in its associations with all that is great in Italian cooking. Try the original Spaghetti Bolognese which probably tastes different in Bologna to your own home recipe. It is also renowned for fabulous Tortellini. Bologna is also home to many trade fairs. The region named for the Via Emilia, the Roman road built in the 2nd century BC by the Marcus Emilius Lepidus. The term Romagna, which indicates the southeast part of the Region, was only officially added to the name Emilia in 1947.
